CAN/MAR week #4

 Monday 7/28/25 PEI

Today is our last full day on PEI. We were still camping at Northumberland Park and day tripped near the park. We went to a house of a guy who collects glass bottles and builds whimsical structures with them. Then it was onto another PEI lighthouse. This lighthouse did have a Chowder House next to it where we had chowder and oysters.

Now we leave PEI for Nova Scotia taking the ferry from PEI to the northwest coast of NS. We stayed the night at Whycocomagh Provincial Park. Nothing realy exciting to say about this park other than it was clean well kept.

We spent the next few days driving the Cabot Trail. We moved up the northwest coast of NS to Cape Breton Island and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Along the way we stopped at the first Single Malt distillary in North America. It looked just like the the distillaries we had visited in Scotland.  Our campsite was at Cheticamp Campground. We befriended a couple of women from Florida (Gulfport) and New Mexico at camp. Apparently we had been crossing paths the past few days.

A cemetery we found a long the way at Whale Cove.

Drive to Mira River Campground.  First we  went to Baddeck which is home to tthe Alexland Grahamm Bell Historic Site. There was a museum about Bell here. It was interesting for read about his other inventions and interests.  Sorry no pics today

8/2/25
We went to Fortress Louisbough National Historic Site. In the mid-eighteenth century this was one of the 4 largest ports on the east coast (Boston, New York and Charleston). This was a French settlement until the English threw them out (with the help of American colonists). The English gave the site back to the French. Once they decided they decided they needed it to invade Quebec, they threw out the Franch for the second and last time. Cod fishing was the primary activity here. Next we left Cape Breton Island and drove to Salsman Provincial Park where we camped.

Our visit to Cape Breton has ended as we heard towards Halifax. Along the way we stopped at a funky dinner (Ralph's Downeast Dinner) for lunch. Then onto Laurie Provincal Park outside of Halifax. This was a nice drive as we took the coast road and saw a lot of trees and seashore.
