ALCAN Day 41 Heyder, AK

August 15, 2024  0 km/miles of travel but ~80 km of driving around the area

FYI often at our overnight stops I have no Internet to update posts, but I try to publish ASAP.

Today was a semi-rest day. We stayed on the US side of the border most of the day. First we went to the "Wildlife Viewing Area" to see some bears but were skunked. So it was on to see the Salmon Glacier. While at the viewing area a couple from Austria and Spain who are cycling from Whitehorse to Mexico asked if we could give them a ride to the Glacier. After we explained that they would have to ride on the Zac Seat with Zac they agreed, so off the five of us went. Shortly after leaving the Viewing Area the road turn to gravel; generally okay and often bad to very bad. This was a 28 km drive (I know I'm in the US but the truck is set to metric). This road crossed into Canada, but there was no customs either direction. There was an active mining operation midway. This was another spectacular site. The Europeans did not come back down with us. So it was another 28 km of gravel road. We stopped at the Wildlife Viewing Area again with no luck. Then it was on to Heyder "town central. We went to the harbor to view the 10-15 boats docked there. Becoming hungry we went to the only "restaurant" in town; a shack selling fish and chips (caught by the son), then it was on to the only bar/liquor store in town the "Glacier Inn". We were Hyderized by the bartender. (A shot of something without tasting or smelling in one gulp). It was just Everclear.  We then went back the the wildlife view area and again with no luck. The bear had just left minutes before we got there. We did meet up with the Europeans, who did get to see the bear. Then it was back to Camp Run A Muck for the night.
